Understanding TRIR

What is TRIR?

The Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) is a safety metric that indicates the number of recordable work-related injuries and illnesses per 100 full-time equivalent employees (FTE) during a one-year period.

TRIR is calculated using the formula: (Number of Recordable Incidents × 200,000) ÷ Total Hours Worked

The constant 200,000 represents the equivalent of 100 employees working 40 hours per week, 50 weeks per year.

What Counts as Recordable?

Recordable incidents include:

  • Work-related deaths
  • Days away from work cases
  • Restricted work activity cases
  • Medical treatment beyond first aid
  • Loss of consciousness cases
  • Significant injury/illness diagnosed by physician

Important Notes:

TRIR calculations should include all work-related incidents that meet OSHA recordability criteria. Consult OSHA regulations and safety professionals for accurate incident classification and reporting requirements.
